New York State Assembly Member Monique Chandler-Waterman and David Myrie of Taylor Lovett Dance Academy are the 14th Annual Dance Champions.
Their performance, inspired by the movie "Dancehall Queen," was electrifying. In the movie, a local street vendor from Kingston, Jamaica, whose family is faced with financial hardship and trauma, enters a dance contest in disguise to win the top prize to support her family and free herself from her troubles.
Monique and David's dance piece celebrated gaining victory over internal struggles and trauma, and turning pain into purpose. Students from the Taylor Lovett Dance Academy performed in their winning dance routine.
More than 470 guests voted and crowned Monique and David the 14th Annual Dance Champions. With their win, Taylor Lovett Dance Academy received $10,000 to provide 10 children with a year of free dance education and training to reach their full potential.
This event was made possible by AARP New York, the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the National Urban League, BK Reader and friends like you.
